Fuel Tank: Removal

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  3. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank. See Fig 1 .
  4. Remove the two pins from the fuel tank front protector. See Fig 2 .
  5. Remove the three fuel tank front protector bolts and remove the fuel tank front protector. See Fig 3 .
  6. Disconnect the fuel vapor hose from the fuel vapor valve.
    NOTE: Label the fuel return line and fuel supply line to ease installation.
  7. Loosen the fuel return hose clamp and slide it away from the fuel return hose connection. See Fig 4 .
    NOTE: Use a rag to prevent fuel from spilling while disconnecting the fuel lines.
  8. Disconnect the fuel return hose at the fuel tank.
  9. Loosen the fuel supply hose clamp and slide it away from the fuel supply hose connection. See Fig 5 .
  10. Disconnect the fuel supply hose at the fuel tank.
  11. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector. See Fig 6 .
  12. Loosen the hose clamp from the fuel tank to filler pipe hose and slide the hose clamp toward the fuel tank. See Fig 7 .
  13. Separate the fuel tank to filler pipe hose from the fuel tank filler pipe.
  14. Place a jack under the fuel tank to support it when the fuel tank support straps are removed.
  15. Remove the two fuel tank support strap bolts and allow the fuel tank support straps to hang down. See Fig 8 .
  16. Remove the spring clips from the fuel tank support strap hinges.
  17. Remove the fuel tank support strap hinges and remove the fuel tank support straps.
    NOTE: An assistant may be necessary to remove the fuel tank.
  18. Lower the fuel tank from the vehicle.
