Section 11 (Tire Pressure Warning System - Diagnosis): Pre-Check

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Toyota Sienna. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
    1. The tire pressure warning system warns decline of the tire air pressure to the driver. When the tire pressure warning system detects the low air pressure which disturbs safe driving from any of 4 wheels, the tire pressure warning lamp comes on.
NOTE: When the ignition switch is OFF, the tire pressure warning lamp goes off. However, when the ignition switch is turned ON again, and the vehicle is driven at more than 30 km/h (19 mph), the tire pressure warning lamp comes on again.
  2. TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEM PRECAUTION
    1. When the tire pressure warning lamp comes on, immediately check the air pressure of the tire and adjust it to the specified pressure (See INSPECTION ). When the ignition switch is turned OFF, the tire pressure warning lamp goes off.
    2. This system needs initializing after changing tires or wheels and rotating the tires.
    3. In the following cases, the system does not operate normally.
      • When vehicle speed is 30 km/h (19 mph) or less.
      • When tires size is different from that which is specified.
      • When tires of different sizes or types are used simultaneously.
      • When the spare tire or snow tires are used, or when chains are used.
      • When the vehicle is driven on unpaved, extremely rough or slippery roads.
      • When one of the tires on the vehicle is extremely worn or new.
    4. When the run-flat tires are used, replace the tire if the pressure is 100 kPa (1 kgf/cm, 14 psi) or less. (if the tire is reused, it could damaged).
  3. FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION
    1. When a system malfunction occurs in the tire pressure warning system, the tire pressure warning lamp blinks.
NOTE: If the malfunction returns to normal, the tire pressure warning lamp does not blink.
    2. The result of this diagnosis is stored in the skid control ECU.
  4. TIRE PRESSURE WARNING DISPLAY FUNCTION
    1. Based on the tire pressure warning system condition, turn the tire pressure warning lamp on as shown in the table.

NOTE: When the skid control ECU does not operate properly, the ABS warning lamp comes on as ABS system malfunction.
  5. INITIAL SETTING OF TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEM
    1. Check and adjust the tire air pressure to the specified value (See INSPECTION ).
    2. With the vehicle stopped, turn the ignition switch ON.
    3. Press the tire pressure warning switch until the tire pressure warning lamp blinks 3 times at a 1 second interval. (Continue pressing the tire pressure warning switch for approximately 3 to 4 seconds.) (Receipt of the initialization signal.)
Fig 4: Pressing Tire Pressure Warning Switch & Inspecting Tire Pressure Warning System
      G02933382Courtesy of © TOYOTA, LICENSE AGREEMENT TMS1002
NOTE: When the tire pressure warning lamp does not blink, PERFORM initialization again. (with the ignition switch off, PERFORM the procedure above starting at step  b.)
    4. Drive the vehicle and speed it up at 30 km/h (19 mph) or more, and then initialize when the skid control ECU to its initial condition. (It takes about 0.5 to 1.0 hour to complete the initialization depends on.)
NOTE: If the tire pressure warning lamp blinks at 0.25 second intervals while the vehicle is being driven, the initialization may be failed, so PERFORM the initialization again. (Turn the ignition switch OFF and retry from step  b.)
    5. After initialization, the skid control ECU monitors the decrease of the tire air pressure.
  6. DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
    1. Inspect the battery voltage.

      Battery voltage: 11 to 14 V

If voltage is below 11 V, recharge the battery before proceeding.

    2. Check DLC3.
Fig 5: Identifying DLC 3 Connector Terminals
      G02933383Courtesy of © TOYOTA, LICENSE AGREEMENT TMS1002

The vehicle's skid control ECU uses ISO 9141-2 for communication. The terminal arrangement of DLC3 complies with SAE J1962 and matches with the ISO 9141-2 format.

Verify conditions listed in table below:

      TERMINALS CONNECTION & CONDITION

Terminal No. Connection / Voltage or Resistance Condition
7 Bus + Line / Pulse generation During transmission
4 Chassis Ground to Body Ground / 1 Ω or less Always
      16 Battery Positive to Body Ground / 9 to 14 V Always
NOTE: If the hand-held tester display shows UNABLE TO CONNECT TO VEHICLE when the cable of the hand-held tester is connected to DLC3, the ignition switch is turned ON and the tester is operated, there is a problem on the vehicle side or tester side.
    • If communication is normal when the tester is connected to another vehicle, inspect DLC3 on the original vehicle.
    • If communication is still not possible when the tool is connected to another vehicle, the problem is probably in the tester itself, so consult the Service Department listed in the tester's instruction manual.
  7. CHECK WARNING LAMP
    Fig 6: Checking Warning Lamp

    1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
    2. With the ignition switch ON, the lamp should illuminate for 3 seconds and then go out.
    NOTE:
    • However, during initialization, the tire pressure warning lamp comes on for 4 seconds.
    • If the tire pressure warning lamp has a defect, check the tire pressure warning lamp output patterns (See the tire pressure warning lamp display function, step  4) and the problem symptoms table (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE ).
  8. CHECK TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SWITCH FUNCTION (USING SST CHECK WIRE)
    1. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF.
    2. Using the SST, connect the terminals TS and CG of DLC3.

    5. Check that the tire pressure warning lamp comes on.
      NOTE:
      • Unless the above operation including (d) is Performed, the tire pressure warning lamp remains off while TEST mode.
      • When the tire pressure warning system has any problem, the tire pressure warning lamp blinks at 0.5 second interval.
