Service Information: Removal
CAUTION:
The transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid component damage. The converter driveplate, oil pump, or oil seal can be damaged if the converter is left attached to the driveplate during removal. Be sure to remove the transmission and converter as an assembly.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. (Refer to DIFFERENTIAL & DRIVELINE/PROPELLER SHAFT/PROPELLER SHAFT - REMOVAL)
- Remove the front propeller shaft. (Refer to DIFFERENTIAL & DRIVELINE/PROPELLER SHAFT/PROPELLER SHAFT - REMOVAL)
- Remove the engine to transmission structural cover (1), 5.7L shown. See Fig 1. For 3.7L, refer to REMOVAL

1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - DRIVEPLATE 3 - TORQUE CONVERTER BOLTS - Remove the torque converter bolts (3). See Fig 2.
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - INPUT SPEED SENSOR - Remove the exhaust support bracket from the rear of the transmission.
- Disconnect and lower or remove any necessary exhaust components.
- Remove the starter motor.
- Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt.
- Disconnect the input speed sensor (2) connector. See Fig 3.
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR - Disconnect the output speed sensor (2) connector. See Fig 4.
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - TRANSMISSION SOLENOID/TRS ASSEMBLY - Disconnect the solenoid and pressure switch assembly (2) connector. See Fig 5.
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - LINE PRESSURE SENSOR - Disconnect the line pressure sensor (2) connector. See Fig 5.
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - MANUAL LEVER 3 - SHIFT CABLE 4 - SHIFT CABLE BRACKET 5 - BOLT - Disconnect gearshift cable (3) from transmission manual valve lever (2) and shift cable bracket (4). See Fig 7.
1 - NV140 TRANSFER CASE 2 - NUTS 3 - TRANSMISSION 4 - TRANSFER CASE VENT TUBE - If necessary, remove the NV140 transfer case (1) from the transmission (3). See Fig 8. (Refer to TRANSMISSION/TRANSFER CASE - REMOVAL)
1 - NV245 TRANSFER CASE 2 - NUTS 3 - TRANSMISSION 4 - TRANSFER CASE VENT TUBE - If necessary, remove the NV245 transfer case (1) from the transmission (3). See Fig 9. (Refer to TRANSMISSION/TRANSFER CASE - REMOVAL)
1 - BOLTS - Remove the engine oil pan to transmission bolts (1), 5.7L only. See Fig 10.
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - FILL TUBE 3 - DIPSTICK 4 - BOLTS - Remove the bolt (4) holding the transmission fill tube (2) to the transmission (1) and remove the fill tube and dipstick (3). See Fig 11.
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER LINES - Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines (2) at transmission (1) fittings and clips. See Fig 12.(Refer to COOLING/TRANSMISSION/TRANS COOLER - STANDARD PROCEDURE)
1 - ENGINE 2 - TRANSMISSION 3 - BOLTS 4 - WIRING HARNESS CLIPS - Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
- Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
- Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
- Remove bolts attaching crossmember to frame and remove crossmember.
- Remove all remaining transmission (2) to engine (1) bolts (3). See Fig 13.
1 - ENGINE 2 - TRANSMISSION - Carefully work transmission (2) and torque converter assembly rearward off engine (1) block dowels. See Fig 14.
- Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
- Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
- To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.
