Test B: Wipers Do Not Operate Properly
NOTE:
After repair, repeat GEM self-test and clear DTCs.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) or Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located behind instrument panel to right of steering column. Depress clutch pedal (M/T). Observe GEM PIDs IGN_S, IGN_R, IGN_A and IGN_KEY while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID IGN_KEY values do not agree with switch positions, go to TEST D: KEY-IN-IGNITION CIRCUIT .
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe PID WPMODE while turning wiper/washer switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, go to step 6.
- Using NGS/WDS tester, trigger GEM active command WIPER RLY to ON and OFF. If the wipers turn on and off, go to next step. If wipers do not turn on and off, go to step 10.
- Trigger GEM active command WIPER RLY to ON. Trigger GEM active command SPEED RLY to ON and OFF. If wiper speed changes on activation and deactivation of SPEED RLY, go to next step. If wiper speed does not change on activation and deactivation of SPEED RLY, go to step 16.
- Observe GEM PID WPPRKSW while turning wipers on. If PID values agree with wiper position, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If PID values do not agree with wiper position, go to step 27.
- Disconnect multifunction switch 7-pin harness connector C240. Test wiper portion of multifunction switch. See WIPER/WASHER SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay, go to next step. If switch is faulty, replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect GEM 26-pin harness connector C352. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Dark Blue wire) at GEM harness connector C352. See Fig 1. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 18 (Pink/Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector C352. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 19 (Light Blue/Orange wire) at GEM harness connector C352. If battery voltage exists, repair short to power in appropriate wire(s). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 5 (Dark Blue wire) at GEM harness connector C352. See Fig 1. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 18 (Pink/Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector C352. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 19 (Light Blue/Orange wire) at GEM harness connector C352. If any resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in appropriate wire(s). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If each resistance is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step.
- Measure resistance in Dark Blue wire between terminal No. 5 at GEM harness connector C352 and terminal No. 685 at multifunction switch harness connector C240. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between terminal No. 18 at GEM harness connector C352 and terminal No. 590 at multifunction switch harness connector C240. Measure resistance in Light Blue/Orange wire between terminal No. 19 at GEM harness connector C352 and terminal No. 993 at multifunction switch harness connector C240. If any resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s). If each resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Remove wiper on/off relay from battery junction box. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Dark Green wire) at wiper on/off relay socket. See Fig 3. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Yellow/White wire) at wiper on/off relay socket. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in appropriate wire(s). See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Attach 30-amp fused jumper wire between wiper on/off relay socket terminals No. 3 and 5. See Fig 3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If wiper motor runs, go to next step. If wiper motor does not run, go to step 22.
- Test wiper on/off relay. See MICRO RELAYS under COMPONENT TESTS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is faulty, replace relay.
- Remove wiper on/off relay. Disconnect GEM 12-pin harness connector C293. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 12 (Yellow/White wire) at GEM harness connector C293. See Fig 4. If battery voltage exists, repair short to power in Yellow/White wire. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Yellow/White wire) at GEM harness connector C293. See Fig 4. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow/White wire.
- Measure resistance in Yellow/White wire between terminal No. 12 at GEM harness connector C293 and terminal No. 2 at wiper on/off relay socket. See Fig 3 and Fig 4 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/White wire.
- Remove wiper high/low relay. Using NGS/WDS tester, trigger GEM active command WIPER RLY to ON. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 86 (Dark Green wire) at wiper high/low relay socket. See Fig 5. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 30 (Yellow/Red wire) at wiper high/low relay socket. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in appropriate wire(s). See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Using NGS/WDS tester, trigger GEM active command WIPER RLY to ON. Attach 30-amp fused jumper wire between terminals No. 30 and 87A at wiper high/low relay socket. See Fig 5. Wipers should run at low speed. Disconnect jumper from terminal No. 87A at high/low relay socket and attach to terminal No. 87 at high/low relay socket. Wipers should now run at high speed. If wipers operate as indicated, go to next step. If wipers do not operate as indicated, go to step 26.
- Test wiper high/low relay. See MINI RELAYS under COMPONENT TESTS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is faulty, replace relay.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM 12-pin harness connector C293. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at GEM harness connector C293. See Fig 4. If battery voltage exists, repair short to power in Gray/Light Blue wire. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 5 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at GEM harness connector C293. See Fig 4. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less repair short to ground in Gray/Light Blue wire.
- Measure resistance in Gray/Light Blue wire between terminal No. 5 at GEM harness connector C293 and terminal No. 85 at high/low relay socket. See Fig 4 and Fig 5 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Light Blue wire.
- Remove wiper high/low relay and on/off relay. Measure resistance in Yellow/Red wire between terminal No. 3 at on/off relay socket and terminal No. 30 at high/low relay socket. See Fig 3 and Fig 5 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/Red wire between wiper high/low relay socket and wiper on/off relay socket.
- Test wiper high/low relay. See MINI RELAYS under COMPONENT TESTS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is faulty, replace relay.
- Disconnect wiper motor 5-pin harness connector. Measure resistance in Dark Blue/Orange wire between terminal No. 87A at wiper high/low relay socket and terminal No. 4 at wiper motor harness connector C151. See Figure and Fig 5 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Blue/Orange wire between wiper motor, in-line connector C107 and wiper high/low relay.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 3 (Black wire) at wiper motor harness connector C151. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, test wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR under COMPONENT TESTS. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire between wiper motor, splice S101 and ground G400. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS .
- Disconnect wiper motor 5-pin harness connector. Measure resistance in White wire between terminal No. 5 at wiper motor harness connector C151 and terminal No. 87 at wiper high/low relay socket. See Fig 5 and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, test wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR under COMPONENT TESTS. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire between front wiper motor, in-line connector C107 and wiper high/low relay.
- Disconnect wiper motor 5-pin harness connector. Disconnect GEM 12-pin harness connector C293. Measure resistance in Black/Pink wire between terminal No. 1 at wiper motor harness connector and terminal No. 1 at GEM harness connector C293. See Fig 4 and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Pink wire between wiper motor harness connector C151, splice S280, and GEM.
NOTE:
Dark Blue wire runs between GEM, in-line connector C288 and wiper/washer switch. Pink/Yellow wire runs between GEM, in-line connector C288 and terminal No. 590 at wiper/washer switch. Light Blue/Orange wire runs between GEM, in-line connector C288 and wiper/washer switch. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS .
NOTE:
Dark Green wire runs between wiper on/off relay socket, splice S113, in-line connector C107, splice S312, in-line connector C331, splice S225 and fuse No. 26 (30-amp) at central junction box. Yellow/White wire runs between wiper on/off relay, in-line connector C1008 and GEM. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS .
NOTE:
Dark Green wire runs between wiper high/low relay, splice S113, in-line connector C107, splice S312, in-line connector C331, splice S225 and fuse No. 26 (30-amp) at central junction box. Yellow/Red wire runs between terminal No. 30 at wiper high/low relay socket and terminal No. 3 at wiper on/off relay socket. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS .

Gray/Light Blue wire runs between terminal No. 5 at GEM harness connector C293, in-line connector C1008 and terminal No. 85 at wiper high/low relay socket. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS .
