System Testing
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of dash, near steering column. If scan tool is not available, connect voltmeter between DLC terminals No. 9 (ETACS terminal) and 4 or 5 (ground terminals). See Fig 1
. Turn ignition on. Turn defogger on or off. If scan tool buzzer sounds once or voltmeter needle deflects once, ECU input signal for defogger switch circuit is okay. Go to step 3). If scan tool buzzer does not sound or voltmeter needle does not deflect, go to next step.
- Perform defogger switch test. See DEFOGGER SWITCH TEST
. If defogger switch is okay, turn ignition off. Disconnect defogger switch connector. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between defogger switch connector terminal No. 4 and ground. See Figure
. If voltage is 5 volts, check wiring circuit and connections between defogger switch and ground. Repair as necessary. If circuit and connections are okay, replace ETACS control unit. If 5 volts do not exist, check wiring circuit and connections between defogger switch and ETACS control unit. Repair as necessary.
- Perform defogger relay test. See DEFOGGER RELAY TEST
. If defogger relay is okay, turn ignition off. Remove defogger relay. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between defogger relay connector terminal No. 5 and ground. See Figure
. If battery voltage does not exist, check for blown fuse No. 6 or fusible link No. 2. If fuse and fusible link are okay, check wiring circuit and connections between defogger relay and fusible link. Repair as necessary. If battery voltage exists, go to next step.
- Using voltmeter, measure voltage between defogger relay connector terminal No. 3 and ground. See Figure
. If battery voltage does not exist, check for blown fuse No. 13. If fuse is okay, check wiring circuit and connections between defogger relay and ignition switch. Repair as necessary. If battery voltage exists, go to next step.
- Check wiring circuits and connections between defogger relay and ETACS control unit, defogger relay and defogger grid, and between defogger grid and ground. If circuits and connections are okay, replace ETACS control unit.
