Steering Column Removal and Installation: Installation

Reference: STEERING COLUMN INSPECTION 

CAUTION: Tightening the fasteners in the wrong order may cause damage to the shaft joint bearing. Be sure to tighten the steering column nuts in the order given before installing the steering lower shaft.
  1. Confirm that front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
  2. Install steering column.
  3. Tighten steering column front nuts (1) on lower side and then steering column rear nuts (2) on upper side to specified torque.
    NOTE:
    • Make sure that clearance between stud bolt (1) and lower bracket (3) should be 0 (zero) when installing.
    • Check the following points, after tightening steering column nuts.
      • Telescopic function and tilt function move smoothly when lever is released.
      • Telescopic function and tilt function are securely fixed when lever is locked.

    Tightening torque 

    Steering column nut (a): 14 N.m (1.4 kg-m, 10.5 lbf-ft) 

  1. Install steering column harness clamps (4) to bracket.

  2. Align matchmark (1) on joint (3) of steering lower shaft to pinion shaft (2).
  3. Tighten lower joint bolt (4) to specified torque.

    Tightening torque 

    Lower joint bolt (a): 25 N.m (2.5 kg-m, 18.5 lbf-ft)

  4. Install steering joint cover, see STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN COMPONENTS .
  5. Install contact coil cable assembly and steering angle sensor, see CONTACT COIL CABLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. Install steering wheel, see STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  7. Install steering column hole cover and instrument panel undercover, see COMBINATION METER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
