Installation (Samurai & Sidekick)

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. If reference mark was not made as described in removal procedure, go to next step.
  2. Turn crankshaft (clockwise direction) until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Align rotor with center of cap bolt hole. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 (STEP 1).
  3. Before installing distributor, ensure "O" ring is in good condition. Replace as required. If new "O" ring is installed, lubricate with engine oil. On all models, install distributor into gearbox. On Samurai, when distributor is fully seated, rotor should point in direction shown in illustration. See Fig 1 (STEP 2).
  4. On Sidekick with TBI, when distributor is fully seated, rotor should point to center of hold-down bolt. See Fig 2 (STEP 2). On Sidekick with MPI, when distributor is fully seated, rotor will point to about the 1 o'clock position.
  5. On all models, ensure distributor is fully seated. Install distributor hold-down bolt. Adjust ignition timing. Refer to the ADJUSTMENTS article.

NOTE: On Swift, distributor drive coupling and camshaft slot are offset. Distributor cannot be installed backward.
