Final Assembly
- Install drive pinion into final drive housing. Install selected pinion bearing preload shim and spacer followed by rear bearing onto drive pinion. Install lock washer and nut. Torque nut to 87 ft. lbs. (118 N.m). Install final drive housing on work stand and attach pulley and spring pull gauge to pinion lock nut.
- Recheck pinion bearing preload and adjust as necessary. Stake lock nut at 2 places if bearing preload is okay. Install differential assembly without axle shaft in final drive housing, using care not to damage oil seal holder bores. Install axle shafts and secure with snap rings.
- Check clearance between differential pinion shaft and axle drive shafts using a feeler gauge. Clearance should be .008" (.20 mm) or less. If clearance is greater than specification, install a snap ring of a different thickness. Axle shaft snap rings are available in thicknesses of .0394-.0433" (1.000-1.100 mm) and .0453-.0492" (1.150-1.250 mm).

- Install axle shaft oil seal holders (without "O" rings) using Wrench (399780111), paying attention to left or right markings. Install Handle (899924100) and Shaft (398653600) to reduction drive gear and turn gear several times. Screw in holder on ring gear side until it lightly bottoms. Repeat procedure several times.
- Screw in holder on opposite side of ring gear until it bottoms. Install oil seal holder lock plate and back off holder on ring gear side about 1 1/2 notches. Tighten holder on opposite side of ring gear. Temporarily tighten lock plate on ring gear side. Screw in holder on opposite side of ring gear 1/2 to 1 notch and temporarily tighten lock plate.
- Mount a dial indicator on final drive housing with indicator tip touching ring gear teeth and check ring gear backlash. Ring gear backlash should be .004-.007" (.10-.18 mm). If backlash is not within specification, recheck drive pinion depth adjustment and correct as necessary.
- Once correct adjustment has been made, loosen ring gear side holder until "O" ring groove appears. Install "O" ring and tighten holder to previous position. Place lock plate on holder and torque to 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m). Perform same procedure on opposite oil seal holder.

- Apply a coating of petroleum jelly to governor assembly needle roller bearing and oil seal lips and install governor assembly. Install washer and NEW gasket to governor cover. Install governor cover assembly and torque attaching bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 N.m).
- Install stator shaft to torque converter housing with gasket in place and with flange of shaft facing upward. Torque attaching bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m). Coat reduction drive gear shaft with gear oil. Install a new gasket and attach converter housing to final drive housing. Torque attaching bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m). Install parking actuator assembly on final drive housing.
