Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Scion xB. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
  • Turn the ignition switch off before measuring the resistances of the CAN main wire and the CAN branch wire.
  • After the ignition switch is turned off, check that the key reminder warning system and light reminder warning system are not in operation.
  • Before measuring the resistance, leave the vehicle as is for at least 1 minute and do not operate the ignition switch, any other switches or the doors. If doors need to be opened in order to check connectors, open the doors and leave them open.

    HINT:

    Operating the ignition switch, any switches or any doors triggers related ECU and sensor communication with the CAN, which causes resistance variation.

  1. CHECK DLC3 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      C14-6 (CANH) - C14-14 (CANL) Ignition switch off 108 to 132 Ω
      NOTE: When the measured value is 132Ω or higher and a CAN communication system diagnostic trouble code is output, there may be a fault besides disconnection of the DLC3 branch wire. For that reason, troubleshooting should be performed again from "HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING " after repairing the trouble area.

    NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE CAN BRANCH WIRE CONNECTED TO DLC3 (CAN-H, CAN-L) 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  2. CHECK CAN MAIN WIRE OR CONNECTOR (CAN CENTER J/C SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Disconnect the A33 CAN LH junction connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A33-9 (CANH) - A33-20 (CANL) Ignition switch off 108 to 132 Ω

    NG:  Go to step  7

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  3. CONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Reconnect the CAN LH junction connector.
  4. CHECK CAN MAIN WIRE OR CONNECTOR (ECM) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Disconnect the A36 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A36-41 (CANH) - A36-49 (CANL) Ignition switch off 108 to 132 Ω

    NG: Go to step 5 

    OK : REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )

  5. CONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Reconnect the ECM connector.
  6. CHECK CAN MAIN WIRE CONNECTED TO ECM (CAN LH J/C - ECM) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Disconnect the A33 CAN LH junction connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A33-10 (CANH) - A33-21 (CANL) Ignition switch off 108 to 132 Ω

    NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE CAN MAIN WIRE CONNECTED TO ECM (CAN-H, CAN-L) 

    OK : REPLACE CAN LH J/C 

  7. CONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Reconnect the CAN LH junction connector.
  8. CHECK CAN MAIN WIRE OR CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ECU) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off
    2. Disconnect the C37 combination meter ECU connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value in the table below

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      C37-11 (CANH) - C37-12 (CANL) Ignition switch off 108 to 132 Ω

    NG: Go to step 9 

    OK : REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )

  9. CONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Reconnect the combination meter ECU connector.
  10. CHECK CAN MAIN WIRE OR CONNECTOR (CAN CENTER J/C - COMBINATION METER ECU) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off
    2. Disconnect the C48 CAN center junction connector
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value in the table below.

      Standard resistance: 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      C48-2 (CANHI) - C48-13 (CANL) Ignition switch off 108 to 132 Ω

    NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE CAN MAIN WIRE CONNECTED TO COMBINATION METER ECU (COMBINATION METER ECU - CAN CENTER J/C) 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  11. CHECK CAN MAIN WIRE OR CONNECTOR (CAN CENTER J/C - CAN LH J/C) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Disconnect the C48 CAN center junction connector
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value in the table below.

      Standard resistance: 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      C48-10 (CANH) - C48-21 (CANL) Ignition switch off 108 to 132 Ω
