Test B: Scan Tool Does Not Communicate With Class 2 Device
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below instrument panel, right of steering column. See Figure . If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP .
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with each module on class 2 serial data line (Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Vehicle Interface Unit (VIU), Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic module (SDM) and Theft Deterrent Control Module). If scan tool communicates with one or more modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with any module, go to step 4 .
- If scan tool communicates will all modules on class 2 serial data circuit in step 2) , check for intermittent and poor connections. See PRELIMINARY INSPECTION under TROUBLESHOOTING. If scan tool did not communicate with all modules on class 2 serial data circuit, go to step 7 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Check for poor terminal contact at DLC terminals No. 2 (Purple wire) and No. 5 (Black wire). See Figure . If terminal contact is okay, go to next step. If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to appropriate diagnostic system check.
- Check for open in Black wire between ground and DLC terminal No. 5 (DLC ground circuit). If Black wire is okay, go to next step. If Black wire is open, repair as necessary. After repair, go to appropriate diagnostic system check.
- Disconnect all modules on class 2 serial data circuit Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Vehicle Interface Unit (VIU), Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic module (SDM) and Theft Deterrent Control Module. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Check for short to ground or short to voltage in Purple wire(s) between each module on class 2 serial data circuit and DLC terminal No. 2. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to appropriate diagnostic system check. If Purple wire is okay, go to step 8 .
- Check battery feed circuit of module that is not communicating, for open or short to ground. If all battery feed circuits are okay, go to next step. If any battery feed circuit is open or shorted to ground, repair as necessary. After repair, go to appropriate diagnostic system check.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check ground circuit of module that is not communicating, for open. If all ground circuits are okay, go to next step. If any ground circuit is open, repair as necessary. After repair, go to appropriate diagnostic system check.
- Check for open in Purple wire(s) between each module on class 2 serial data circuit and DLC terminal No. 2. If Purple wire is okay, go to next step. If Purple wire is open, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check connector(s) for poor terminal contact of module that is not communicating. See PRELIMINARY INSPECTION under TROUBLESHOOTING. If terminal contact is okay, go to next step. If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Replace module(s) which is not communicating. Program module as required. See appropriate procedure under PROGRAMMING . After repair, go to next step.
- Reconnect all of the disconnected modules and any disconnected connectors. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Wait 10 seconds. Connect scan tool. Attempt to communicate with all modules on class 2 serial data circuit. If scan tool can communicate with all modules on class 2 serial data circuit, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules on class 2 serial data circuit, go to step 2 .
- Select Display DTCs function for each module. Record all DTCs and DTC status. If any DTCs exist that do not begin with a "U", go to next step. If any DTCs exist and begin with a "U" and show as current status, go to step 15 .
- If any DTC exists that do not begin with a "U", go to next step. If any DTC exists that begins with a "U", go to step 17 .
- Diagnose DTC(s) as directed. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . After repair, go to next step.
- If all DTC(s) were diagnosed and repairs made, go to next step. If all DTC(s) were not diagnosed and repairs made, go to 15 .
- Using scan tool, clear all DTCs. Verify no other DTCs exist and scan tool can communicate with all modules on class 2 serial data circuit.
NOTE:
Scan tool may require a power up reset before communication will occur, due to a short on class 2 serial data circuit. Turn off or disconnect scan tool prior to turning ignition switch to RUN position.
