Charging System Check

  1. Ensure battery is in good condition and fully charged. Turn ignition on. If charge indicator illuminates, go to next step. If charge indicator does not illuminate, go to CHARGE INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition on. If engine cranks, go to next step. If starter solenoid does not click or starter solenoid clicks, but engine does not crank, diagnose starter. See appropriate STARTERS article.
  3. Start engine. If charging system and indicator light are operating properly, check is complete. If charge indicator stays on, go to appropriate CHARGE INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYSTEM TESTS. Turn on headlights, wipers, blower motor and rear defogger. Apply brake and shift transmission into Drive. If charge indicator illuminates, go to appropriateCHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT ALWAYS ON  under SYSTEM TESTS.
