Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF. Loosen and retighten engine ground screws. See Figure.
  2. Disconnect electric throttle control actuator sensor harness connector. See Figure. Turn ignition switch ON. Check voltage between electric throttle control actuator terminal No. 1 (Red wire) and ground with CONSULT-II or tester. See Figure. If voltage is approximately 5 volts, go to the next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
  3. Turn ignition switch OFF. Check harness continuity between electric throttle control actuator terminal No. 5 (Black wire) and engine ground. See Figure. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If continuity exists, go to step  5. If continuity does not exist, go to the next step.
  4. Check the following:
    • Check Gray, 6-pin joint connector No. 20 (connector F71) located in relay box on right side of engine compartment. See Figure.
    • Check for open or short between electric throttle control actuator and ECM. See SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  5. Disconnect Gray, 111-pin ECM harness connector (F48). See Figure. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 83 and electric throttle control actuator terminal No. 4 (White wire), ECM terminal No. 84 and electric throttle control actuator terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). See Figure and Figure . Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If continuity exists, go to the next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
  6. Inspect throttle position sensor. Reconnect all harness connectors that have been disconnected. Perform Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning under PROGRAMMING . Turn ignition switch ON. Set selector lever to D position (A/T models) or 1st position (M/T models). Check voltage between ECM terminals No. 83 (TP sensor No. 1), No. 84 (TP sensor No. 2) and engine ground under the following conditions. See TP SENSOR VOLTAGE  table. If results are okay, go to the next step. If results are not good, replace electric throttle control actuator. Perform Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning and Idle Air Volume Learning under PROGRAMMING .
  7. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
