Cruise control - general
The speed based function CC belongs to the driver assistance system and is integrated according to the model and installed equipment in the following control units:
- Model 216 and model 221 (except 221.095/195) without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS: Integration into the ESP control unit (N47-5)
- Model 221.095/195: Integration into the RBS control unit (N30/6)
- Model 216 and model 221 (except 221.095/195) with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS: Integration into the video and radar sensor system control unit (N62/2)
- Model 221 with code (239) Adaptive cruise control Plus Light: Integration into the radar sensors control unit (SGR) (N62/1)
The CC constantly controls the actual speed of the vehicle without operation of the accelerator pedal to the target speed set by the driver.
The vehicle is also automatically braked when driving down a hill to maintain the target speed through interventions in the service brakes.
The function CC also includes the following functionalities:
- Variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version): The variable SPEEDTRONIC allows the driver to set an individual maximum speed for himself in the range v = 30 km/h up to the maximum vehicle speed of v = 250 km/h.
- Permanent limiter: The permanent limiter allows the driver to permanently limit the maximum speed of the vehicle. This additional function is suitable for example for seasonal events such as operation of the vehicle with winter tires the speed rating of which is below the maximum possible speed of the vehicle.
The functionalities listed are regulated by means of a comparison between the specifications made by the driver and the actual value of the vehicle. The functionality is identical for all vehicle models and packages. Differentiation takes place over the control unit which includes the CC function.
To do this the respective control units determine and analyze the following input factors:
- Vehicle speed
- Control signals from push CC button (S40/4)
- Status of accelerator pedal
Vehicle speed:
The ESP control unit or the RBS control unit directly reads in signals from the following components to compute the vehicle speed:
- Left front RPM sensor (L6/1)
- Right front RPM sensor (L6/2)
- Left rear RPM sensor (L6/3)
- Right rear RPM sensor (L6/4)
For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS the ESP control unit transmits the wheel speeds via the chassis CAN to the video and radar sensor system control unit which calculates the current speed internally.
For vehicles with code (239) Adaptive cruise control Plus Light the ESP control unit transmits the wheel speeds via the chassis CAN to the radar sensors control unit (SGR) which also calculates the current speed internally.
Controls signal from push CC button:
The control signals are read in directly from the following switch which is integrated on the CC push button TPM by the steering column tube module (N80):
- Resume from memory (S40/4s1)
- Decelerate and set (S40/4s2)
- Accelerate and set (S40/4s3)
- Switch off (S40/4s4)
The steering column tube module transmits the control signals via chassis CAN which are read in according to the model and installed equipment from the following control units:
- ESP control unit (model 216 and model 221 (except model 221.095/195) without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Regenerative braking system control unit (model 221.095/195)
- Video and radar sensor system control unit (model 216 and model 221 (except model 221.095/195) with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Radar sensors control unit (model 221 with code (239) Adaptive cruise control Plus Light)
Status of accelerator pedal
The status of accelerator pedal (including "kickdown" recognition) is registered by the accelerator pedal sensor (B37) which is directly read in from the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit sends the status of the accelerator pedal sensor via the chassis CAN according to the model and installed equipment to the following control units:
- ESP control unit (model 216.3 and model 221 (except model 221.095/195) without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Regenerative braking system control unit (model 221.095/195)
- Video and radar sensor system control unit (model 216.3 and model 221 (except model 221.095/195) with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Radar sensors control unit (model 221 with code (239) Adaptive cruise control Plus Light)
Operation:
The function CC and variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version) is operated over the CC push button.
Selection of the speed takes place over the controls of the CC button which are shown graphically below:
Design of the CC push button
All of the speed information listed below in mph refers to vehicles with code (494) USA version.
The desired target speed can be set in v = 1 km/h (1 mph-) or v = 10 km/h (5 mph) steps using the following switches:
- Resume from memory
- Decelerate and set
- Accelerate and set
Actuation of the switches listed up to the actuation point increases the set speed by v = 1 km/h (1 mph).
If the respective switch is actuated via the actuation point then the set speed increases each time by v = 10 km/h (5 mph).
If the respective switch is held at or beyond the actuation point then the set speed increases automatically by an interval of t = 0.6 s.
Function sequence for cruise control
The CC function features the following partial functions:
- Function sequence for automatic speed control
- Function sequence for SPEEDTRONIC
Additional automatic speed control function requirements
- CC selected through use of the variable speed switch (without code (494) USA version) (LED, variable speed limiter does not light up)
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP) not switched passively (without model 216.374 and without Model 221.074/174)
- ESP not switched into "SPORT HANDLING MODE" (for model 216.374 and for model 221.074/174)
Function sequence for automatic speed control
Operation of the "Resume from memory" switch causes the last stored target speed to be set in as far as no other target speed was stored in of the control units installed depending on the model and the equipment installed:
- ESP control unit (model 216 and model 221 (except model 221.095/195) without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Regenerative braking system control unit (model 221.095/195)
- Video and radar sensor system control unit (model 216 and model 221 (except model 221.095/195) with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Radar sensors control unit (model 221 with code (239) Adaptive cruise control Plus Light)
If no target speed is stored, the current vehicle speed is set as the target speed.
The set target speed is transmitted for presentation in the IC speedometer (A1p8) of the IC (A1) from the following control units via chassis CAN 1 to the central gateway control unit depending on the model and the equipment installed:
- ESP control unit
- Regenerative braking system control unit
- Video and radar sensor system control unit
- Radar sensors control unit
The central gateway control unit (N93) passes on the information about the specified speed via the backbone CAN (CAN F) to the IC.
View of the IC for an active automatic speed control
If the automatic speed control is activated, the segments in the electronic speedometer are illuminated from the beginning of the tachometer scale through to the end of the specified speed.
Function for vehicles without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS and without code (239) ART Plus Light:
If the vehicle reaches the set target speed then the engine power is reduced automatically.
To do this the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit sends a request to reduce the engine torque via the chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
If the actual speed is below the speed set by the driver an appropriate increase in the torque is requested which the CDI control unit CDI or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is implemented appropriately.
The driver also has the option, through actuation of the accelerator pedal via the accelerate beyond the set speed (e.g. when overtaking).
After release of the accelerator pedal by the driver the CC regulates to reach the set target speed again.
If the vehicle reaches the target speed set by the driver in decel mode, for example by driving down a hill, then the service brake will be actuated the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit via the traction system hydraulic unit (A7/3) in a metered fashion. The A/T is further downshifted if necessary according to the operating condition to relieve the service brake system.
Downshifting of the A/T takes place autonomously by the A/T. This means that the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit just transmits information about the necessity of switching which also includes limitation of the switching via the chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit passes on the respective information or the request via the drive train CAN (CAN C) to the EGS control unit (N15/3) for mechanism 722.6) or the fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) (Y3/8n4) (for transmission 722.9) which implements this appropriately.
The following events lead to deactivation of the automatic speed control:
- Operation of the OFF switch
- Actuation of brake pedal
- Active regulation of the ESP
- Speed v < 25 km/h or v < 17 mph
- Electric parking brake activated
- Gear range not "D"
Function for vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS or code (239) ART Plus Light:
If the vehicle reaches the set target speed then the engine power is reduced automatically.
To do this the video and radar sensor system control unit or the radar sensors control unit transmits a request to reduce the engine torque via the chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
If the actual speed is below the speed set by the driver an appropriate increase in the torque is requested which the CDI control unit CDI or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is implemented appropriately.
The driver also has the option, through actuation of the accelerator pedal (e.g. when overtaking), to accelerate beyond the set target speed.
After release of the accelerator pedal by the driver the CC regulates to reach the set target speed again.
If the vehicle reaches the target speed set by the driver in decel mode (for example by driving down a hill) the video and radar sensor system control unit or the radar sensors control unit transmits a request to brake the vehicle to the ESP control unit. The ESP control unit reacts by actuating the service brake via the traction system hydraulic unit.
The A/T is additionally downshifted if necessary according to the operating condition to relieve the service brake system.
Downshifting of the A/T takes place autonomously by the A/T. This means that the video and radar sensor system control unit or the radar sensors control unit only transmits information about the necessity of switching which also includes limitation of the switching via the chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The following events lead to deactivation of the automatic speed control:
- Operation of the OFF switch
- Actuation of brake pedal
- Active regulation of the ESP
- Speed v < 25 km/h or v < 17 mph
- Electric parking brake activated
- Gear range not "D"
Function sequence for SPEEDTRONIC
The partial function SPEEDTRONIC is subdivided into the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version)
- Function sequence for permanent limiter
Additional function requirements for variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version)
- The variable SPEEDTRONIC is using by the variable speed switch (LED, variable speed limiter lights up)
- No "Kick-down" recognized
- ESP not passively engaged (without model 216.374. and 221.074/174)
- ESP not switched into "SPORT HANDLING MODE" (for model 216.374 and for 221.074/174)
Function sequence for variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version)
The function variable SPEEDTRONIC limits the maximum speed of the vehicle variably from a speed of v = 30 km/h.
For example, if the driver sets the limit of the maximum speed to v = 50 km/h then the maximum speed of the vehicle is limited to v = 50 km/h.
If the cruise control push button is switched to the variable SPEEDTRONIC, the CC is deactivated.
The variable SPEEDTRONIC is deactivated for:
- Operation of the OFF switch
- Kickdown (accelerator pedal pressed by >90% and vehicle speed v <20 km/h away from selected maximum speed)
Function for vehicles without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS and without code (239) ART Plus Light:
Acceleration and braking of the vehicle is controlled by the driver. To do this a comparison is made as for the function CC between the current actual speed with the target speed set by the driver by the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit.
The ESP control unit or the RBS control unit transmits the respective information to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit which calculates the respective driving dynamic parameters for the engine timing from the input factors from the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit. If the driver accelerates the vehicle to the limit of the target speed, the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit a request is made to reduce the engine torque to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
If the vehicle reaches the target speed set by the driver in decel mode, for example by driving down a hill, then the service brake will be actuated the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit via the traction system hydraulic unit in a metered fashion. The A/T is further downshifted if necessary according to the operating condition to relieve the service brake system.

The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit passes on the appropriate information or request via the drive train CAN to the EGS control unit or the fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) which implements these appropriately.
Function for vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS or code (239) ART Plus Light:

Additional function requirements for permanent limiter
- Function of the permanent limiter is activated in the menu "Settings", the menu level "Vehicle" under "Limitation (winter tires)" in the IC.
The function of the permanent limiter can be activated independently of the status of the ESP.
Function sequence for permanent limiter
The maximum speed of the vehicle can be limited in v = 10 km/h or 5 mph steps of v = 160 to 240 km/h or v = 100 mph to 150 mph.
Function for vehicles without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS and without code (239) ART Plus Light:
The set maximum speed is transmitted by the IC via the backbone CAN to the central gateway control unit.
This passes on the information via the chassis CAN to the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit.
If the vehicle reaches the maximum speed set by the driver the ESP control unit or the RBS control unit transmits a request to reduce the torque via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

At about v = 10 km/h (v = 5 mph) below the set maximum speed a message is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) which indicates limitation of the maximum speed.
In the case of an active permanent limiter, the set speed cannot exceed the target speed set in the permanent limiter by the CC or variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version).
