Removing & Installing Electronic Selector Lever Module (ESM)
Remove/Install
WARNING:
Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
CAUTION:
Bolts with locking splines, micro-encapsulated bolts and self-locking nuts must always be replaced after being used once. There is an increased risk of injury when unscrewing micro-encapsulated bolts due to the sudden breakaway torque. Before new micro-encapsulated bolts are screwed in, the mating thread must be re-cut in order to remove all the residue of the old bolt locking compound.

Raise vehicle.NOTE: The vehicle must be horizontal. Place the vehicle on the lifting platform.

Unhinge shift rod (1) at intermediate lever (2) of electronic selector lever module control unit N15/5). See Fig 1.NOTE: Detach locking plate (1b) from shift rod (1) with needle nose pliers.
- 3 - Remove selector lever handle (3) with cover. See REMOVE/INSTALL SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE WITH COVERING .
- 4 - Remove cover (4) at selector lever.

Cover selector lever gate of electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) with a cloth.CAUTION: If objects enter the electronic selector lever module control unit, it can be damaged.
- 6 - Remove ashtray housing (5) at center console. See Remove/Install Ashtray Housing From Front Center Console .
- 7 - Unscrew screws (6a).
- 8.1 - On front foldable armrest with compartment code 303, open center armrest (7).
- 9.1 - With telephone in the center armrest, remove cable retainer (8).
- 10 - Take out inlaid section (9) and floor panel (10).
- 11 - Unscrew screws (6b).

Remove center console (11) vertically toward top and place laterally.NOTE: DO NOT disconnect electrical connectors.NOTE: Installation: DO NOT jam the electrical feed lines.
- 13 - Unscrew bolts (12). Upon installation, tighten bolt of floor shift-to-body to 6 N.m.
- 14 - Disconnect electrical connector (13) at electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5). Lift locking shackle (14a) against spring load in the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5), twist clutch (14b) around 90° and detach cable (14) of ignition switch.

Remove electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5).NOTE: Installation: DO NOT jam any electric cables in between.
- 17 - Install in the reverse order.
- 18 - Read out DTC memory. Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS, interrogate fault memory.
- 19 - Perform function check. If in bad condition, adjust shift rod. See REMOVE/INSTALL & SET SHIFT ROD .
