Demand Controlled Hot-Wire Cleaning (Burn-Off)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1992 Mercedes-Benz 400E. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

During engine operation dirt can accumulate on hot-wire changing its resistance and measurement values. To clean hot-wire, 4 seconds after engine shutdown, the hot-wire is heated for approximately one second to approximately 1832°F (1000°C) when the following conditions are present: engine coolant temperature is more than 140°F (60°C), engine speed exceeded 1650 RPM once, air mass of more than approximately 662 lbs. has been drawn into engine, and engine has been started at least 10 times since last burn-off.

NOTE: Air mass of 662 lbs. is equal to engine running under partial load at 5000 RPM for approximately one hour.
