Disabling System

  1. Turn all vehicle accessories off. Turn the ignition switch to off. At the Central Junction Box (CJB), located below the left side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse F2.20 (10A) from the CJB.
  2. Turn the ignition on and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding. Turn the ignition switch to off.
  3. WARNING: On diesel engines with dual batteries, the primary battery positive cable remains energized after it is disconnected.
  4. Record radio preset frequencies for reprogramming (if equipped). On gasoline engines with single battery, disconnect negative battery cable. On gasoline engines with dual batteries, also disconnect auxiliary negative battery cable (on right frame rail). On diesel engines, disconnect primary negative battery cable. Disconnect and INSULATE primary battery positive cable.
  5. On all models, wait at least one minute for backup power supply to deplete stored energy. Ensure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Remove driver air bag module. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE . Connect appropriate air bag simulator to clockspring connector at top of steering column (in place of air bag). See Figure. See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
  6. Release retaining clips and remove right lower instrument panel finish panel. Remove bolts and remove right lower instrument panel finish panel reinforcement and reinforcement mounting bracket. Locate and disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector between interior engine cover and passenger air bag module. See Fig 1.
  7. Attach air bag simulator to harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector. See AIR BAG SIMULATOR . Install the RCM fuse F2.20 (10A) to the CJB. Reconnect all battery cables.
