Sector Shaft Over-Center Preload
CAUTION:
For Cherokee and Wrangler, always adjust worm shaft bearing preload before adjusting sector shaft over-center preload torque.
- Rotate stub shaft from stop-to-stop and count number of turns. Starting at either stop, rotate shaft in reverse direction 1/2 number turned during stop-to-stop. Attach an INCH-lb. torque wrench in vertical position onto stub shaft. See Fig 1. Turn torque wrench in a 45-degree arc on each side of vertical center. Record highest over-center rotational reading. This is over-center rotating torque.
- Rotate stud shaft between 90-180 degrees to left of center and record left off-center preload. Repeat this to right of center and record right off-center preload. Average of these two recorded readings is preload rotating torque. Over-center rotating torque should be 3-7 INCH lbs. (.34-.79 Nm) for Cherokee and Wrangler, and 4-7 INCH lbs. (.45-.79 Nm) for Grand Cherokee, GREATER than preload rotating torque.
- If adjustment to over-center rotating torque is necessary, loosen adjuster lock nut, then turn sector shaft adjuster screw counterclockwise until fully extended, then turn clockwise one full turn. See Fig 1.
- Remeasure over-center rotating torque. If over-center rotating torque is not correct, turn adjuster screw clockwise to increase torque, or counterclockwise to decrease torque. Remeasure torque. If necessary, continue adjusting adjuster screw until correct over-center rotating torque is attained. When correct torque is attained, prevent adjuster screw from turning while tightening adjuster lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
