Steering Pump Pressure Test

  1. Install Pressure Gauge (J-5176) and Adapter (J-35465) between steering gear and power steering pump. Connect pressure gauge on pressure line with shutoff valve at steering gear housing.
  2. Fill fluid reservoir and open shutoff valve. Bleed air from system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING  under LUBRICATION in this article.
  3. Ensure fluid level is correct and fluid temperature is approximately 176°F (80°C). Start engine and allow to idle.
  4. With wheels straight-ahead, close shutoff valve for less than 10 seconds and note pressure reading. Open shutoff valve.
CAUTION: DO NOT  close shutoff valve for more than 10 seconds or damage to system components may result.
  5. Repair or replace power steering pump if pressure is less than 924 psi (65 kg/cm2 ). With shutoff valve open, check and record pressure reading at 1000 and 3000 RPM.
  6. Pressure reading should be less than 71 psi (4.9 kg/cm2 ) difference between the readings. Repair or replace steering gear if pressure reading exceeds specification.
