Steering Pump Pressure Test
- Install Pressure Gauge (J-5176) and Adapter (J-35465) between steering gear and power steering pump. Connect pressure gauge on pressure line with shutoff valve at steering gear housing.
- Fill fluid reservoir and open shutoff valve. Bleed air from system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING under LUBRICATION in this article.
- Ensure fluid level is correct and fluid temperature is approximately 176°F (80°C). Start engine and allow to idle.
- With wheels straight-ahead, close shutoff valve for less than 10 seconds and note pressure reading. Open shutoff valve.CAUTION: DO NOT close shutoff valve for more than 10 seconds or damage to system components may result.
- Repair or replace power steering pump if pressure is less than 924 psi (65 kg/cm2 ). With shutoff valve open, check and record pressure reading at 1000 and 3000 RPM.
- Pressure reading should be less than 71 psi (4.9 kg/cm2 ) difference between the readings. Repair or replace steering gear if pressure reading exceeds specification.
