Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid
When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use the proper power steering fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid will cause hose and seal damage and fluid leaks.
- If the power steering system has been serviced, bleed the power steering system to remove any trapped air from the system. Power Steering System Bleeding
- Fully charge the hydro-boost accumulator using the following procedure:
- Start the engine.
- Charge the brake booster accumulator by rotating the steering wheel until it hits the end of travel in either direction.
- Firmly apply the brake pedal 5 to 10 times to verify brake functionality.
- Turn the engine OFF.
- Clean the area surrounding the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
- Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
- Inspect the power steering fluid level at regular intervals and add as necessary. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Install the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
With hydro-boost only, the oil level will appear falsely high if the hydro-boost accumulator is not fully charged. Do not apply the brake pedal with the engine OFF. This will discharge the hydro-boost accumulator.
The ADD and FULL COLD marks on the cap stick are calculated for ambient temperature. If the power steering fluid is hot, the fluid level may appear slightly high.
The ideal power steering fluid level is between the ADD and the FULL COLD marks. Since overfilling is just as undesirable as underfilling, there is no reason to fill all the way up to the FULL COLD mark.
