Power Steering System Bleeding
NOTE:
- Always use clean, new power steering fluid from a sealed container. Never reuse any drained power steering fluid regardless of appearance or condition.
- Power steering hoses and pipes touching the frame, body, or engine may cause both system noise and vibration. Always verify the power steering system hoses and pipes are routed correctly.
- Loose power steering fluid hose and pipe connections may not leak but could still allow air into the steering system. Always verify that all power steering hose and pipe connections are tight.
- Power steering fluid level must be maintained throughout bleed procedure.
- With hydro-boost only, the oil level will appear falsely high if the hydro-boost accumulator is not fully charged. Do not apply the brake pedal with the engine OFF. This will discharge the hydro-boost accumulator.
- Power steering system level measurement methods may vary from vehicle to vehicle.
- Fill power steering fluid reservoir to the minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or the middle hash mark on power steering pump reservoir cap stick fluid level indicator. Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
- Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
- With the ignition ON and the engine OFF, turn the steering wheel completely to the left and to the right 10 times.
- Verify power steering fluid level.
- Repeat the power steering system bleed procedure, if necessary, starting with step 1, until the power steering fluid level is at the correct level.
- Upon completion of the initial power steering system bleed:
- With the power steering fluid reservoir cap removed from the power steering fluid reservoir, start the engine.
- Charge the brake booster accumulator by rotating the steering wheel until it hits the end of travel in either direction.
- Firmly apply the brake pedal 5 to 10 times to verify brake functionality.
- Turn the engine OFF.
- Verify the power steering fluid level.
- Add power steering fluid as necessary.
- Install the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
- Upon completion of the final power steering system bleed:
- Start the engine.
- Turn the steering wheel completely to the left and to the right 10 times.
- Check for signs of cavitation or fluid aeration (power steering pump noise/whining).
- Repeat steps 1 - 7 as necessary.
