Four-Wheel Drive Systems - Overview: Notes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The four-wheel drive system is a part-time system activated using a rotary switch mounted in the center console.
The system provides torque to the axle in 3 different delivery methods selected via the rotary MSS:
- 2H - 2-wheel drive (rear axle driven)
- 4H - four wheel drive high range (front and rear axles driven)
- 4L - four wheel drive low range (front and rear axles driven, with gear reduction for increased torque)
Selectable Off Road Modes are available via the push-button Terrain Management (TM) switch, located in the MSS (mode select switch):
Four modes are available:
- Normal
- Grass/Gravel/Snow
- Mud/Ruts
- Sand
The TM modes alter the following systems to provide enhanced off road driving performance:
- Throttle control
- ABS Module
The four wheel drive system is supplemented by an Electronic Locking Differential (ELD). For additional information, refer to: Rear Drive Axle and Differential - Overview .
