Test H: Set Speed Fluctuates

NOTE: After completing any repairs, perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .
NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using an Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove speed control actuator cable from servo/actuator. See SPEED CONTROL SERVO/ACTUATOR CABLE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Visually inspect cable and throttle movement. If speed control servo/actuator cable is okay, go to next step. If speed control servo/actuator is faulty, replace speed control servo/actuator cable. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  2. Test drive vehicle and observe speedometer. If speedometer fluctuates, repair speedometer as necessary. See appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - SABLE & TAURUS article. If speedometer does not fluctuate, replace speed control servo/actuator. See SPEED CONTROL SERVO/ACTUATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.After repair, test system for normal operation.
