Power Transfer Unit

REMOVAL 

1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
3. Remove the engine belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
4. Remove the right side front halfshaft. Refer to FRONT HALFSHAFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
5. Remove the fasteners from the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) bracket.

6. Remove the fasteners securing the PTU bracket to the engine block and remove the PTU bracket from the vehicle.

7. Remove the exhaust crossunder pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
8. Remove and position aside the right catalytic converter. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
9. Remove the fasteners securing the PTU upper heat shield.

10. Remove the fastener securing the PTU upper heat shield and remove the heat shield from the vehicle.

11. Remove the fasteners securing the PTU lower heat shield and remove the heat shield from the vehicle.

12. Remove the torque strut to pivot mount bracket bolt at the transmission.

13. Using a support stand, shift the front of the drivetrain upward.
14. Install the (special tool #2075300030, Remover, Driveshaft Front Joint) to the driveshaft with tapered bore of the tool towards the driveshaft joint boot.

15. Using a prybar to pry against the (special tool #2075300030, Remover, Driveshaft Front Joint) separate the driveshaft from the PTU.

16. Remove and DISCARD  the retention ring on the output shaft of the PTU.
17. Remove the rear engine mount isolator. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
18. Remove the pivot mount bracket bolts from the pivot mount bracket.

19. Remove the pivot mount bracket bolt and remove the pivot mount bracket from the vehicle.

20. Disconnect the PTU actuator wire harness connector.

21. Remove the fasteners from the PTU.

22. Remove the fasteners from the PTU. Remove the PTU from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION 

1. Position the PTU on the transmission.
2. Install the fasteners retaining the PTU. Tighten to proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

3. Install the fasteners retaining the PTU. Tighten to proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

4. Connect the PTU actuator wire harness connector.

5. Install the pivot mount bracket and hand tighten the fasteners.

6. Install and tighten the pivot mount bracket bolt to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

7. Tighten the remaining pivot mount bracket bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
8. Install the rear engine mount isolator. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
9. Install a NEW  retention ring on the output shaft of the PTU. Lightly grease the splines of the output shaft.
10. Install the driveshaft to the PTU.

11. Remove the support stand and lower the drivetrain in position.
12. Install the torque strut to pivot mount bracket bolt at the transmission and tighten to proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

13. Place the PTU lower heat shield into position and install the fasteners. Tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

14. Place the PTU upper heat shield into position and install the fasteners. Tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

22. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
23. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
