DRIVEABILITY Problems: Surge

NOTE: For additional wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  .

Most likely causes are ignition system, air/fuel mixture or EGR solenoid system problems.

  1. Connect scan tool to data link connector, located under instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Turn ignition off. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE - 3.0L article for appropriate test.
  2. Using scan tool, perform actuator tests No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6: INJECTOR. See ACTUATOR TESTS  under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. If all injectors actuate, go to next step. If any injector does not actuate, see DTCS P0201, P0203 & P0205: INJECTOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (CYLINDERS NO. 1, 3 & 5) or DTCS P0202, P0204 & P0206: INJECTOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (CYLINDERS NO. 2, 4 & 6) under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE - 3.0L article.
  3. Check timing using scan tool and perform actuator test No. 17: BASIC IGNITION TIMING. See ACTUATOR TESTS  under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. If timing is within specification, go to next step. If timing is not within specification, check for abnormal sensor disk or sensor face making contact with trigger wheel. Recheck symptom.
  4. Using scan tool, check data list items No. 11, 13, 21, 25, 27, 28, 39, 59 and 69. See DATA LIST REFERENCE  under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. If all data list items are okay, go to next step. If any data list item is not okay, repair or replace as necessary. Recheck symptom.
  5. Using scan tool, perform actuator test No. 10: EGR SOLENOID. See ACTUATOR TESTS  under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. If EGR solenoid is okay, go to next step. If EGR solenoid is not okay, repair or replace as necessary. Recheck symptom.
  6. Using scan tool, check data list items No. 11 and 39. See DATA LIST REFERENCE  under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. Voltage should fluctuate between 0-0.4 volt and 0.6-1.0 volts at idle at operating temperature. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  8 .
  7. Check fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE TEST under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE article. If fuel pressure is not as specified, repair or replace as necessary. Recheck idle. If fuel pressure is as specified, check intake manifold gaskets, air inlet hose, vacuum lines, and PCV valve. Check injectors for clogging. Repair as necessary. Recheck symptom.
  8. Check fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE TEST under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE article. If fuel pressure is as specified, check ignition coil, cap, rotor, spark plugs and spark plug cables. Check EGR system. Repair as necessary. Recheck idle. If fuel pressure is not as specified, repair or replace as necessary. Recheck symptom.
