Crankshaft Position Sensor

Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is a Hall Effect-type sensor. CKP sensor is mounted above crankshaft drive belt pulley (2.4L) or crankshaft timing belt sprocket (3.0L). See Fig 1 or Fig 2 . Sensor reads slots on outer edge of pulley or sprocket. Each slot causes a pulse to be generated as it passes under CKP sensor. Signal generated provides engine speed and CKP information to engine control module/powertrain control module, which along with other input signals, determines fuel injection sequence, ignition signal and spark timing.
