Fluid Condition & Level Check

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the Park range.
CAUTION: The engine must be running when the transmission fluid fill plug is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Transmission fluid may be hot. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fill plug. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid. DO NOT turn the engine OFF with the fill plug removed, as you can be injured by hot transmission fluid being expelled out of the oil fill opening.
  3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. The vehicle must be level with the engine running and the shift lever in the Park range.
  4. Remove the transmission fluid level hole plug (36).
NOTE: The transmission fluid may darken with normal use and does not always indicate contamination or oxidation.
  5. Inspect the fluid color. If necessary, use a small screwdriver as a dipstick. If the fluid color is Red or Light Brown with no burnt odor, go to step  8. If not, proceed to next step.
  6. If the fluid has a burnt odor or a Dark Brown color, go to step  12. If not, proceed to next step.
  7. If the fluid has a cloudy or milky appearance, go to step  11. If not, go to step  12.
  8. Let the fluid temperature rise until it has reached 86-122°F (30-50°C). Inspect the fluid level. The level should be even with the bottom of the threaded plug hole. If the fluid level is good, go to step  32. If the fluid level is low, proceed to next step.
  9. Add appropriate fluid in increments of 0.5 quart (0.5 L) until the fluid drains from the hole plug. If more than 1.6 quarts (1.5L) was added to the transmission, proceed to next step. If not, proceed to step  32.
  10. Check transmission for leaks. If a leak was found, go to step  15. If no leak was found, go to step  32.
  11. The transmission fluid is contaminated with engine coolant. Repair or replace the transmission cooler in the radiator. See AUXILIARY OIL COOLER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When repair or replacement is completed, proceed to step  15.
  12. Drain the fluid by removing the transmission oil pan drain plug (63).
  13. Remove the transmission oil pan. See DRAINING & REFILLING .
NOTE: A very small amount of material in the bottom of the pan is a normal condition.
  14. Inspect the bottom pan for any excessive debris. Proceed to next step if excessive debris is found. If there was no excessive debris, go to step  24.
  15. Repair the transmission, if required. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
NOTE: If the transmission is overhauled, it may be necessary to flush the transmission fluid cooler and pipes. See OIL COOLER FLUSHING & FLOW CHECK .
  16. Add enough fluid to bring the fluid level to the bottom of the threaded plug hole.
  17. Start the engine.
  18. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the Park range.
  19. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. The vehicle must be level with the engine running and the shift lever in the Park range.
  20. Let the A/T fluid temperature rise until it has reached 86-122°F (30-50°C). Remove the transmission plug.
  21. If needed, add appropriate fluid in increments of 0.5 quart (0.5L) until the fluid drains from the threaded hole plug.
NOTE: If the level hole plug (36) and "O" ring (37) are not damaged, they should be reused.
  22. Allow fluid to finish draining out of the plug hole. Inspect the level hole plug (36) and "O" ring (37) for damage. Install the transmission hole plug (36) and tighten to the specified value. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  23. Wipe any excess fluid from the transmission with a rag or shop towel. When the repair is complete, the system is in good working condition.
  24. Change the fluid and fluid filter.
  25. Start the engine.
  26. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the Park range.
  27. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. The vehicle must be level with the engine running and the shift lever in the Park range.
  28. Let the A/T fluid temperature rise until it has reached 86-122°F (30-50°C). Remove the transmission level hole plug (36).
  29. If needed, add appropriate fluid in increments of 0.5 quart (0.5L) until the fluid drains from the threaded hole plug.
NOTE: If the level hole plug (36) and "O" ring (37) are not damaged, they should be reused.
  30. Allow fluid to finish draining out of the plug hole. Inspect the level hole plug (36) and "O" ring (37) for damage. Install the transmission level hole plug (36) and tighten to the specified value. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  31. Wipe any excess fluid from the transmission with a rag or shop towel. When the repair is complete, the system is in good working condition.
  32. Let the AT fluid temperature rise until it has reached the specified value. Allow fluid to finish draining out of the hole plug. Inspect the level hole plug (36) and "O" ring (37) for damage. Install the transmission level hole plug (36) and tighten to the specified value. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
NOTE: If the level hole plug (36) and "O" ring (37) are not damaged, they should be reused.
  33. Wipe any excess fluid from the transmission with a rag or shop towel. When the repair is complete, the system is in good working condition.
