Draining & Refilling
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Place a suitable drain pan under the transmission fluid drain plug.
- Remove and discard the transmission fluid drain plug.
- Allow the transmission fluid to drain.
- Inspect the transmission fluid for discoloration and contamination while draining.
- After the transmission fluid has finished draining, install a NEW transmission fluid drain plug. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the transmission oil pan bolts (3). See Fig 1.
- Lightly tap the oil pan (2) with a rubber mallet if necessary in order to loosen.
- Remove the oil pan (2) and the gasket (4).
- Clean and inspect the following for damage or wear:
- Magnet (1).
- Pan (2).
- Bolts (3).
- Gasket (4).
- Remove the fluid filter (2). Use a long screwdriver in order to pry the fluid filter neck out of the seals. See Fig 2.
- Remove the 2 fluid filter seals (1) using Universal Seal Remover (J 23129) and Slide Hammer Adapter (J 6125-1B).
- Install 2 NEW fluid filter seals (1), onto the transmission fluid filter neck. See Fig 2. Coat the new seals with a small amount of Transjel Lubricant (J 36850) or petroleum jelly before installation.
- Install the transmission fluid filter (2) into the case.NOTE: Oil pan gaskets are reusable. Replace the gasket ONLY if the sealing surface is damaged.
- Install the transmission oil pan (2) and the gasket (4) at the same time. See Fig 1.
- Install the oil pan bolts (3). Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove and discard the transmission fluid fill plug. See Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure .
- Fill the transmission to proper level. See FLUID CONDITION & LEVEL CHECK .
- After filling the transmission, install a NEW transmission fluid fill plug. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Inspect the oil pan gasket for leaks.
