Transmission Removal

Special Tools Required 

NOTE:
  • Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
  • Special tool engine hanger must be used with the side engine mount installed.
  1. Secure the hood in the wide open position with the support rod.
  2. Do the battery removal procedure (see REMOVAL ).
  3. Remove the charge air cooler cover.
  4. Remove the air cleaner (see AIR CLEANER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  5. Remove the battery base (see step 7 on ENGINE REMOVAL ).
  6. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
  7. Remove the wheels.
  8. Remove the splash shield (see FRONT SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT ).
  9. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).

  10. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
  11. For '07 model: Disconnect the transmission range switch connector (A).

  12. Remove the transmission ground cable terminal (B), and remove the harness clamp (C) from the bracket.
  13. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (A).

  14. Remove the spring clip/washer ('07 model) (B), the spring clip ('08-09 models) (C), and the control pin (D), then separate the shift cable end (E) from the control lever (F).
  15. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable (see SHIFT CABLE REPLACEMENT ).
  16. For '08-09 models: Disconnect the transmission range switch connector.

  17. Disconnect the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (A), the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B), the 3rd clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (C), and the ATF temperature sensor connector (D).

  18. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A), the solenoid valve B connector (B), solenoid valve C connector (C), the 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (D), and the shift solenoid harness connector (E).

  19. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover (F).
  20. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF lines (B). Turn the end of the ATF cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hoses and lines.

  21. Remove the breather hose (A) from the hose clip (B), remove the cooler by-pass hoses (C) from the clamps (D), and remove the bolt securing the clamp bracket (E).

  22. Remove the bolts securing the harness clamp/ junction box bracket from the transmission housing.

  23. Remove the hose (A) from the clamp on the intake air duct, and remove the intake air duct (B).

  24. Attach the engine support eyelet (07AAK-SNAA600) to the cylinder head with the support bolt (07AAK-SNAA500). Tighten the bolt by hand.

  25. Remove the top corner clip (A) from the front grille on both sides. Place the engine support mount pads (07AAK-STKA120) over the hood edge cushions (B), and align the pins with the clip hole (O.

  26. Remove both lids for the front damper flange nuts from the cowl cover. Use the adapter (A) between the cross arm foot (B) and body when positioning the engine support hanger.

  27. Carefully position the engine support hanger (AAR-T-12566) on the vehicle, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine support eyelet (07AAK-SNAA600). Tighten the wing nut (C) by hand to lift and support the engine/transmission assembly.
    NOTE: Use care when working around the windshield.
  28. Insert a 6 mm Allen wrench (A) in the top of the ball joint pin (B), and remove the nuts (C), then separate the stabilizer link (D) from the stabilizer (E).

  29. Remove the nuts (F) and bolt (G) securing the lower arm (H) and ball joint (I), and separate the lower arms from the ball joints.
  30. Remove the three-way catalytic converter.

  31. Remove the bolt securing the transfer breather hose bracket (A), and disconnect the breather hose (B) from the breather pipe (C) on the transfer assembly. Cap the breather pipe to prevent fluid from leaking out.

  32. Make a reference mark (A) across the propeller shaft (B) and the transfer companion flange (C).

  33. Separate the propeller shaft from the transfer companion flange.
  34. Remove the bolts securing the ATF cooler line at the front of the subframe.

  35. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the drive plate bolts (B) (8) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.

  36. Remove the bolt securing the power steering fluid line clamp bracket at the right front of the subframe.

  37. Remove the power steering fluid hose from the hose clamps.

  38. Remove the steering gearbox bracket mounting bolts.

  39. Remove the steering gearbox bracket mounting bolts.

  40. Remove both steering gearbox stiffener mounting bolts.

  41. Place a jack under the engine, raise it just enough to take it off of the mount, and remove the lower torque rod bolts.

  42. Remove the jack.
  43. Remove the propeller shaft protector.

  44. Make reference marks on the body across the marks (A) (B) on the edge of the subframe.

  45. Attach the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the subframe by looping the strap over the front of the subframe, then secure the strap.

  46. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.
  47. Remove the lower arm bracket mounting bolts (A).

  48. Remove the six bolts (B) (C) securing the front subframe (D), and lower the subframe.
  49. Hang the steering gearbox from the body with a strap.
  50. Disconnect the 2nd clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector.

  51. Remove the driveshafts from the differential and intermediate shaft.

  52. Remove the intermediate shaft heat shield (A).

  53. Remove the intermediate shaft (B).
  54. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over driveshaft ends and intermediate shaft ends.
  55. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.

  56. Place a jack under the transmission, raise it just enough to take it off of the mount, and remove the transmission mount bracket bolt and nuts.

  57. Remove the jack.
  58. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolts.

  59. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.

  60. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut on the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear the side frame.
  61. Place a jack under the transmission.
  62. Remove the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.

  63. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
  64. Install the propeller shaft protector.

  65. Remove the torque converter and dowel pins.

  66. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it's damaged.
  67. Remove the clamp bracket from the transmission.

  68. Remove the transfer assembly from the transmission.
