The Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) is located in the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) from which it is supplied with power. It is however only the Steering Angle Sensor which communicates on the Control Area Network (CAN).

Fitted into the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) is a code wheel which follows the steering wheel rotation. Nine optical digital sensors and two analogue photo diodes read the code from the wheel. The code signal which is generated shall form a specific pattern. The Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) checks the signals and if the signal pattern is in any way incorrect the trouble code is set.

The trouble code may be diagnosed when the ignition is on and the angle sensor is initiated. The sensor is initiated by the steering wheel being turned by more than 4.5° in either direction.
