The engine control module (ECM) monitors the engine temperature using a sensor.

If the control module detects that the value from the engine temperature sensor does not change during engine warm-up phase, the diagnostic trouble code is generated.

The control module's for the diagnostic trouble code starts when the calculated engine temperature has increased by 20 °C and the fuel temperature by 5 °C since engine start, but only if the fuel temperature has dropped by at least 5 °C since the end of the previous driving cycle.
