Condition

An internal gear position sensor is installed in the transmission control module (TCM). Information about the present position of the gear selector is transferred from the gear selector assembly via a mechanical cable. The gear position sensor comprises two hall sensors, one main sensor and one auxiliary sensor. Two permanent magnets influence the sensors when the position of the gear position sensor is changed.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the transmission control module (TCM) registers that the main sensor signal is displaying an illegally high value.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the ignition is switched on.

Substitute Value 

• Emergency program Emergency mode 4 in the transmission control module (TCM) has been initiated.

HINT:  EMERGENCY MODE IN THE EVENT OF A FAULT 

Possible Source 

• The gear position sensor position (offset) needs to be adjusted
• Internal fault in the transmission control module (TCM).

Fault symptom[s] 

• General warning lamp lit
• Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
• Harsh gear shifting.
