Three hall sensors are installed on the printed circuit board for the gear selector module (GSM). A permanent magnet on the gear selector lever influences the output signals from the sensors to the gear selector module (GSM). When the gear selector has been moved to geartronic position (MAN), the automatic transmission is still hydraulic in position D, but by moving the gear selector upwards (+), the gear selector module (GSM) sends a signal to the transmission control module (TCM) to shift up. If the gear selector is moved down (-), a signal is sent from the gear selector module (GSM) to the transmission control module (TCM) to shift down. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the gear selector module (GSM) registers that the signals from the gear selector do not correspond in position "Geartronic".

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the ignition is switched on.
