Checking Components
For variable valve timing control to function properly, the engine oil must be at the right level, of the right grade and free from contaminants.
Check the engine oil level and grade; check especially for contaminants.
The diagnostic trouble code indicates that the basic camshaft setting has been changed. The most likely causes are:
- Improperly meshed timing belt.
- Faulty camshaft changeover valve (seized valve slide).
HINT: First check that the camshaft and crankshaft are properly adjusted in regard to an improperly meshed timing belt.
Try cleaning the camshaft switchover valve if the camshaft and crankshaft are properly adjusted.
If the above fault tracing does not remedy the fault, try with a new camshaft switchover valve.
Remedy as necessary.
HINT: The fault can also be caused by a damaged variable valve timing unit. If the above fault tracing/measure does not help, it could indicate a damaged variable valve timing unit.
