The rear electronic module (REM) transmits information about the fuel level and the fault status of the fuel level sensor to the central electronic module (CEM) via the controller area network (CAN). This information is then sent on to the engine control module (ECM).

The engine control module (ECM) compares the engine fuel consumption with the change in fuel level over a set period of time. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the engine control module (ECM) registers an implausibly small reduction in the fuel level compared with calculated fuel consumption.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the engine control module (ECM) registers large variations in the fuel level during the time the car is stationary.
