Removal & Installation: Installation

  1. Install timing belt over pulley on the crankshaft and route belt upwards. Install lower snow cap and bolts. Install splash guards under engine compartment.
  2. Ensure camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are still aligned. See Figure. When installing a new idler pulley, tighten bolt to specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . When installing a new timing belt tensioner, screw tension pulley into place using center screw. Screw in center screw by hand. Ensure that tensioner fork is centered over cylinder block rib. Ensure that Allen hole on eccentric is at 10 o'clock.
  3. Install timing belt in correct sequence shown in Fig 1.
  4. With timing belt installed, turn crankshaft clockwise until timing belt tensions. Belt must have tension between intake camshaft sprocket, idler pulley and crankshaft.
CAUTION: Timing belt tension MUST be adjusted when the engine is cold. Around 68°F (20°C) is the best temperature. See Fig 2.
  5. Holding tensioner bolt stationary, use a 6-mm hex wrench to turn tensioner counterclockwise until tensioner indicator passes marked position. See Figure.
  6. Turn tensioner eccentric back so that indicator's position is in center of window. See Figure. Holding eccentric in this position, tighten bolt "B" to 15 ft. lbs (20 N.m) without moving tensioner.
  7. Recheck adjustment by pressing pin "A" clockwise and counterclockwise to check. See Fig 3. Install upper timing cover. Rotate crankshaft 2 complete revolutions, and check that markings on crankshaft pulley and timing gears align with marks on timing gear cover. Ensure indicator pin "A" is in middle. Readjust if necessary. After readjustment, always turn crankshaft 2 complete revolutions to check if tensioner indicator returns to correct position.
  8. Install timing covers. Install engine mount. Tighten bolts on engine side to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten bolts on body side to specification. Install power steering reservoir.
NOTE: Timing belt tensioner indicator will be in different positions depending on engine temperature. At very low or high temperatures, tensioner indicator will be to left or right of center. See Fig 2.
  9. Remove engine lifting tool. Install metal bracket for power steering hose on rotation protection for serpentine drive belt. Install right front wheel. Install serpentine drive belt. Install right hand engine cover and cover over right headlight unit. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
NOTE: Close lid in side cover and move wheels to straight-ahead position.
