DESCRIPTION

The remanufactured automatic transmissions have unique serial numbers, however only the serial number of the original transmission is recorded in Volvo's warranty systems. For this reason, it is important to record the serial numbers when replacing any automatic transmission components on an automatic transmission.

SERVICE

If it is necessary to replace any component of an automatic transmission under warranty, aside from the complete automatic transmission itself, then the transmission serial number must be included in the repair text in order for the warranty claim to be paid.

NOTE: Transmission components include the valve body, speed sensors, etc... (anything internal to the transmission without including the entire transmission).

To distinguish between different markings on the transmission case, use the attached document in order to aid in identifying the transmission as a remanufactured or original unit and also to aid in locating the serial numbers.

Photo 1 in Fig 1 shows an Aisin-Warner (AW) 55-50/51 automatic transmission. The serial number locations apply to both, the AW 55-50/51 and AW 50-42. If the original equipment (OE) label is painted over, then it is a remanufactured transmission and there will be a serial number stamped into the top of the case with a pink stripe over it. See Photo 2 in Fig 1.

Photo 3 in Fig 2 shows an AW TF80 automatic transmission. If the OE label is painted over, then it is a remanufactured transmission and there will be a serial number stamped into the top of the case with a pink stripe over it. See Photo 4 in Fig 2.

Photo 5 in Fig 3 shows a General Motors (GM) 4T65 automatic transmission. If there is a serial number tag as shown in Photo 5 of Fig 3 and EITHER, Photo 6 or Photo 7 of Fig 3, then it is a remanufactured transmission and the tag will look like EITHER, Photo 6 or Photo 7 of Fig 3. In the example shown in Photo 6 of Fig 3, the serial number is 05TPB1 08030 087. In the example shown in Photo 7 of Fig 3, the serial number is 05TPB1 08273 022.

If the entire automatic transmission must be replaced, refer to RTJ 16819 and RTJ 19278.
