Maintenance Service Reminder Reset - Procedure 14

NOTE: The S40 information applies to early production 2004 cars. In mid-2004, Volvo introduced a redesigned S40. For early production cars, the 4th character of the VIN is V. For late production cars, the 4th character of the VIN is M. Early production S40 models are equipped with 1.9L 4-cylinder engines. Late production S40 models are equipped with 5-cylinder engines.
NOTE: Service reminder light (if equipped) will come on at 5000 or 10, 000 mile intervals to indicate oil and filter change is scheduled. After changing oil and filter, reset mileage counter.
  1. Turn ignition off.
  2. Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer.
  3. Turn ignition on, while continuing to press trip odometer reset button.
  4. The service reminder indicator (SRI) starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds.
  5. Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when the reset has succeeded. The SRI indicator lamp goes out.
