The transmission control module (TCM) and engine control module (ECM) communicate via a standardized serial interface. Both control modules transmit and receive information. The engine control module (ECM) transmits "identification" information to the transmission control module (TCM). Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM-E003 is stored if the transmission control module (TCM) registers that engine control module (ECM) "identity" does not correspond to the programmed "identity".
