The accelerator pedal position sensor has two different internal sensors, where one generates an analogue signal and the other a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal.

If Engine control module (ECM) registers that the analogue signal from the accelerator pedal position sensor is lower than 0.15 V or higher than 4.85 V for longer time than 0.3 seconds with ignition on, then diagnostic trouble code ECM-9530, Too low/high signal, is stored.

For upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, the above detection times are increased from 0.1 to 0.4 seconds.Identifying upgraded software ECM/ETM
