SERVICE INFORMATION

EPROMS on certain M.F.I. and Motronic control modules can be replaced by retailer personnel trained specifically by Volvo to perform this repair. All integrated circuits are sensitive to static charges. Static electric shocks that you cannot see or feel can ruin memory and logic chips in a second. Static electricity generated by simply moving your hand or body CAN RUIN a control module. The damage caused by a discharge of static electricity may be noticed immediately or may become apparent over a period of time. The person handling the EPROM, however, would not be aware that a static discharge had occurred.

Because of this phenomena, a static discharge kit and "ESD approved" tools commonly used in the computer service industry must be used in the EPROM replacement procedure. ESD (Electrostatic Dissipative) tools have plastic or rubber handles/grips that will conduct (dissipate) static electricity, but will not conduct normal electricity due to their high electrical resistance.

Volvo has tested and recommends a standard Field Service ESD Kit by 3M. The kit consists of a 22" x 24" table mat with 2 pockets, and adjustable coiled wrist strap, 2 coiled ground cords which snap onto the work surface, and a 5' cord which attaches to any reliable ground by means of an alligator clip. See Fig 1 .

CHIP PULLERS AND INSERTERS

EPROMS must also be carefully removed and installed with proper tools to avoid damaging delicate and expensive chips. Volvo recommends OK Industries Dual In-Line Chip (DIP) Extractor and the DIP Inserter for EPROM removal and installation. See Fig 2 .

These tools may be ordered from JENSEN TOOLS INC. as follows:
