Checking Fluid Level

Fluid should be up to bottom of fill hole. When adding oil, allow sufficient time for oil to flow into overdrive unit on M46 transmission. The M46 transmission and overdrive use common fluid.
If fluid has to be changed on M46 transmission, overdrive unit has separate oil pan and filter. See Fig 1 .
Use Socket (2836) to remove plug. Clean strainer and magnet with solvent. Replace filter and tighten plug to 14 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Install new gasket and tighten overdrive pan bolts to 84 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
