Differentials & Drive Axles: Overhaul: Inspection

  1. Inspect all parts for wear or damage. Bearings that have any damage from heat or scoring must be replaced. If drive pinion or ring gear show tooth damage from seizing, they must be replaced as a set.
  2. If differential side or pinion gears show any damage, gears must be replaced as a complete set (2 side gears and 2 pinion gears in conventional models or 2 side gears and 4 pinion gears in LSD models).
  3. Flat and thrust washers for differential gears should be replaced. Bolts holding ring gear to case must always be replaced. Pinion flange locking nut must be checked carefully as it loses locking capacity after being removed several times.
  4. Replace drive pinion flange if worn or scored on sealing surface. Always use new oil seals and gaskets. Check axle housing for cracks. Check all brackets on housing for broken welds or damage.
  5. On models with LSD, all friction discs should be replaced if any discs show excessive wear or heat damage. See CHECKING PROCEDURE  for rotational friction under AXLE ASSEMBLY.
