Pre-Adjustment Testing
- On all models, connect a pressure gauge between steering pump and steering gear. See Fig 1 . Ensure fluid in reservoir is at level mark. Place pressure gauge so it can be seen from the driver's seat.
- On 760 GLE models, remove steering wheel impact guard by lifting lower edge and pulling out. On all other models, remove by compressing sides slightly. On all models, install a torque wrench on steering wheel nut.
- With engine at idle, turn steering wheel, with torque wrench, slowly to the right. Read torque when pressure reaches 171 psi (12 kg/cm2 ) on cam gear-type, 285 psi (20 kg/cm2 ) for ZF steering gear.
- Repeat operation turning wheel to left. Torque should be 2.6-3.3 ft. lbs. (3.5-4.5 N.m) as gear approaches specified pressure.
- Difference between both sides must not exceed 9 INCH Lbs. (1 N.m) on cam gear-type. Difference must not exceed 4.4 INCH Lbs. (.5 N.m) on ZF steering gear.
- If difference exceeds specifications on 760 GLE models, the steering gear must be rebuilt or a new one installed. If proper specifications cannot be obtained, on cam gear-type pumps, see CAM GEAR-TYPE ADJUSTMENT in this article.
