Transmission, Installing: Notes

NOTE:

For the special tools needed for the procedure, refer to TRANSMISSION, REMOVING .

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Carefully lift the transmission using the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931  and bring it to its installation position using the Transmission Support :3282  .

-- Insert the transmission without pinching any lines.

-- Attach the transmission to the engine and tighten. Tighten the torque converter to the drive plate.

-- If necessary, turn the crankshaft slightly.

NOTE:

The torque converter nuts can fall into the transmission housing during positioning!

-- If equipped, install the cover -1-.

-- Lift the engine/transmission assembly using the spindles on the Engine Support Bridge :10 - 222 A  .

CAUTION:

There is a risk of damaging the threads in the transmission bracket by inserting the bolts at an angle.

  • Before installing the bolts, the transmission bracket and transmission must be absolutely parallel to each other. If necessary, lift the transmission using the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931  .

-- Align the engine/transmission in its installation position. To do so, lift it just until the threads on the transmission rest all the way against the transmission mount -1-.

-- Install the new bolts -arrows- of the transmission mount -1- at first by hand.

-- Tighten the bolts -arrows- of the transmission mount.

Further installation is performed in reverse order of the removal.

AWD Vehicles

-- Install the bevel box. Refer to BEVEL BOX, INSTALLING .

Continuation for all vehicles

-- Install the drive axles to the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the turbocharger air duct pipe/charge air cooler. Refer to OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR SYSTEM .

-- Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Attach the selector lever cable to the transmission and adjust it. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .

-- Install the battery tray and battery. Refer to BATTERY .

-- Check the ATF level. Refer to ATF LEVEL, CHECKING .

-- Check the coolant level. Refer to COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING .

-- Install the air filter housing with the air duct hose. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the front wheel housing liner. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to the appropriate service information .

-- Perform the basic setting. Connect the Vehicle diagnostic tester and then select "Perform basic setting" under Guided Functions  .

Tip

After replacement of the complete transmission, including the auxiliary hydraulic pump control module, the shifting quality may be not as good as usual in the following 500 km (310.7 miles) of driving distance.

Reasoning: synchronization between the auxiliary hydraulic pump control module and the transmission control module.
