Engine Number
The term "Common Rail" refers to a "shared" fuel high pressure reservoir (rail element) for all fuel injectors in a cylinder bank. The pressure generation and fuel injection processes are separated from each other in this system: a separate high pressure pump generates the high pressure necessary for injection. It is stored in a high pressure reservoir (rail element) and provided to the fuel injectors through short injection lines.
The engine number ("engine code" and "serial number") is located on the left side in the front under the high pressure pump toothed belt -arrow-.
In addition, a sticker with "engine code" and "serial number" is affixed to the intake manifold.
The engine code is also included on the vehicle data plate.
Vehicles with Four-Digit Engine Codes
Four-digit engine codes beginning with "C" are used. The first three digits describe the mechanical structure of the engine and are still stamped on the engine, as before. The fourth digit describes the engine output and torque and depends on the engine control module. The four-digit engine code is on the type label, the vehicle data sticker and the engine control module.
Vehicles for some countries do not have a type label. Installed locations for the vehicle data sticker and the type label. Refer to appropriate service information.
