On-Vehicle Testing: Generator

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Volkswagen EuroVan, 2002 Volkswagen EuroVan, 2001 Volkswagen EuroVan, 2000 Volkswagen EuroVan, and 1999 Volkswagen EuroVan. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Check belt tension, generator mounting, wire routing and ground connections before testing.
NOTE: Perform test while engine is warm.
  1. Turn ignition to OFF position. Connect Black clamp of SUN-VAT 40 or VAT 60 to battery negative connection. Connect Red clamp to battery positive connection. Connect Green clamp to generator B+ output wire at generator or battery.
  2. Turn engine to ON position, and switch on all electrical accessories. Raise engine speed and hold above 3000. If charging current is greater than 75A, generator and voltage regulator are okay. If charging current is less than 75A, go to next step.
  3. Check specific gravity with hydrometer. If specific gravity is less than 1.22, replace battery. If specific gravity is greater than 1.22, replace generator.
