Differential Oil Seal Removal And Installation/Replacement

WARNING: Electricity hazard 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury from electric shock when working on or near high-voltage components.
  • Only authorised and appropriately trained persons may carry out work on high-voltage vehicles and components.
  • Perform High Voltage isolation procedure prior to commencing work.
  • Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is worn until the system is verified safe.
WARNING: Toxic material

Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury possible due to differential oil.

Burns to eyes and skin possible.

WARNING: Hot surface 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in severe injuries due to burns or scalds.
  • Do not commence work until components/liquids have sufficiently cooled down.
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE).

Removal Procedure: 

The procedure for the differential oil seal is identical for all components, there is no difference from eMotor FWD and eMotor RWD. 

  1. Disable HV-System. Refer to HV-SYSTEM DISABLING/ENABLING
  2. eMotor FWD. Remove either the left or right front drive shaft, whichever is required, as per procedure
  3. Remove front wheel drive shaft (left side). Refer to FRONT WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  4. Remove front wheel drive shaft (right side). Refer to FRONT WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  5. eMotor RWD. Remove either the left or right rear drive shaft, whichever is required, as per procedure
  6. Remove rear wheel drive shaft (left side). Refer to REAR WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  7. Remove rear wheel drive shaft (right side). Refer to REAR WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  8. Carefully remove the differential oil seal (1) from the eMotor housing.

    Be careful not to damage or scratch the inner surface of the eMotor housing (2) where the oil seal seats.

    NOTE: Environmental Risk 
    • Collect and dispose of leaking liquids.
    • Observe country-specific disposal regulations.

Installation Procedure:

  1. Insert the new differential oil seal (1) into the eMotor housing. Make sure to fit the oil seal in the correct orientation as shown.

  2. The oil seal outer surface (1) should sit 1 mm inside the outer surface of the eMotor housing (2).
  3. eMotor FWD. Install either the left or right front drive shaft, whichever is required, as per procedure
  4. Install front wheel drive shaft (left side). Refer to FRONT WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  5. Install front wheel drive shaft (right side). Refer to FRONT WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  6. eMotor RWD. Install either the left or right rear drive shaft, whichever is required, as per procedure
  7. Install rear wheel drive shaft (left side). Refer to REAR WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  8. Install rear wheel drive shaft (right side). Refer to REAR WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  9. Check transmission oil level. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID REPLACEMENT AND DRAIN/FILL PLUG REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  10. Enable HV-System. Refer to HV-SYSTEM DISABLING/ENABLING
