Steering Wheel And Column Description And Function (Electric And Manual Adjustment): Notes
Steering Wheel and Column Components:
- Steering wheel assembly (including hands-on/off detection sensor mat)
- Steering column
ECO: manual adjust
PLUS: electric adjust (EASC)
- EPS (electric power assisted steering) intermediate shaft
- R-EPS: Rack assisted Redundant Electric Power Steering
Technical Description:
The electric power steering system (EPS) is a type of assisted power steering. The steering motor and controller are integrated on the steering rack. The controller controls the motor to generate the appropriate boost size and direction according to various input signals (including steering wheel torque signal, vehicle speed signal, steering wheel position signal). Steering control assists by transmitting a noticeable steering force to the steering wheel in the direction required for vehicle stabilization.
The VF 9 is equipped with a rack assisted Redundant Electric Power Steering (R-EPS). Power support is generated by an electric motor, which is mounted directly onto the steering rack. R-EPS allows the integration of ADAS functions, for example Park Assist or Lane Keep Assist.
The primary function of the steering column is to connect the steering wheel to the steering mechanism at the front axle.
Secondary functions are:
- Height and/or length adjustment to suit the driver's preference
- Energy dissipation management in the event of a frontal collision
- To provide mounting for the steering wheel including driver's airbag, multi-function switches and column wiring
Steering Wheel:
The steering wheel is equipped with:
- Driver's airbag, which is also used as the horn button
- Left - and right-hand multi-functional switches (MFS), including infra-red lights used for ADAS functions
- Left - and right-hand stalk levers
- Hands-on/off detection (HOD) sensor mat located underneath the leather wrap for monitoring the driver's condition within the ADAS functions (Refer to DRIVER MONITORING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION
The steering wheel can be adjusted in height and length by releasing the mechanical release lever:
- Push release lever down completely to unlock the steering column
- Adjust the steering wheel to the desired position
- Push release lever up completely to lock the steering column
Steering Wheel Position Memory
- SW position memory is linked to user profile
- When SW position is adjusted, the notify menu will pop up in the center screen to restore the latest position
- Position can be memorized for: driver's seat, steering column, OTR mirrors
Steering wheel adjustment (manual)
For ECO and PLUS models, the steering wheel is covered in leather. The steering wheel has a heating function, which can be selected on the MDU.
