Technical Description - Door Opening Warning
Door opening warning (DOW) is a driver assistance system that warns the occupants inside a stationary vehicle when other road users are approaching the vehicle from behind and there is a high risk of collision. As a no autonomy system, this feature only assists occupants to safely exit the vehicle. It uses radars in the rear bumpers to detect oncoming traffic. The system uses LEDs on the side mirrors to warn the driver, and if an attempt is made to open the driver's door, it will be locked once. When it is locked, the door can only be opened if the driver pulls the handle three times. The doors of all other occupants are not locked. Additionally, ambient lighting is used as a warning mechanism, in combination with directional audible warnings for everybody inside the vehicle.
The DOW function detects and predicts the path of the following target objects:
- Cars
- Motorcycles
- Bicycles
- Shopping carts
Activation/Deactivation:
- Driver can enable or disable the DOW function from MHU
- Activate feature when the vehicle is traveling at a speed less than 0.5 m/s
- Deactivate feature when the vehicle is traveling at a speed greater than 0.7 m/s
- DOW detects and estimates the risk of collision with incoming objects when a door is being opened
- The feature reads the signal to check the status of all doors from the BCM
- The function causes LEDs to flash on the side mirror when a risk of collision is identified
- The function sets off an audible alarm when a risk of collision is detected and the door is opened
- The function triggers an AMBER light at the opened door if a risk of collision is identified
- Driver can set Mode (Off/On)
- If the function detects any failure of itself or ADAS systems, it triggers a MALFUNCTION warning, and sends it to the infotainment system, to alert the driver. If the ADAS system detects some hardware/software failure that prevents the function from working properly, the 'function not available' alert is sent to HMI/IPC, etc.

Operation: (Use Cases):
Door opening warning (DOW) is a driver assistance system that warns an occupant of an approaching road user prior to opening a vehicle door. The system assists occupants to safely exit a vehicle and prevent serious accidents associated with vehicle doors opening in front of oncoming traffic.
When the door opening warning system detects any other road users approaching the vehicle from behind and the risk of collision is high, then the HMI gives a warning sign on the left if the risk is coming from the left, on the right if it is coming from the right, and on both sides if it is coming from both sides.
Driver Warning Mirror:
When the DOW is active, the following will occur:
- An icon is shown on the mirror on the door on the corresponding side
- If the door affected is opened, this icon will start flashing and a chime is heard
- If the door is closed, then the icon on the mirror will disappear
Driver Warning MHU Screen/CarBuddy:
| Sr. No. | Type of warning | Warning icon on MHU screen/CarBuddy |
