Steering Column Removal And Installation/Replacement (Manual)

Mobile Repair Possible:  No

WARNING: Explosive materials 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury due to improper handling of airbag modules possible.
  • Only appropriately trained persons may carry out work on pyrotechnic components or the Airbag Control Unit.
  • Perform SRS disabling procedure prior to commencing work.
  • When replacing components of the SRS system, never install used or non-genuine components.
  • Pyrotechnic Components must be handled and scrapped appropriately.

Removal Procedure: 

  1. Remove multi stalk switch. Refer to MULTI STALK SWITCH REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  2. Remove instrument panel under tray (driver). Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER TRAY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (DRIVER)
  3. Remove firewall trim cover. Refer to FIREWALL TRIM COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  4. Turn the steering wheel so the wheels point forward.

    Removal note: Secure the steering wheel against turning after disconnecting the steering shaft from the bottom of the steering gear or from the steering column. 

  5. Remove the bolt (1) from the top of the steering shaft

    Torque: 33 Nm

  6. Pull the steering shaft (1) off the steering column downwards.

  7. Remove 2 bolts (1).

    Torque: 19 Nm

  8. Remove 2 bolts (1).

    Torque: 19 Nm

  9. Guide out and remove the steering column (1) in arrow direction.

Installation Procedure: 

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following.

    All fasteners must be tightened to torque specification! 

  2. Install firewall trim cover. Refer to FIREWALL TRIM COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Install instrument panel under tray (driver). Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER TRAY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (DRIVER)
  4. Install multi stalk switch. Refer to MULTI STALK SWITCH REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  5. Diagnostics, Programming and Setup. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING SCAN TOOL IN SERVICE
